Unique Hummingbird FeedersWe have hummingbird feeders by all the top manufacturers at great prices. Hummingbird feeders are nectar feeders designed specifically for hummingbirds. Hanging these feeders near windows gives you the opportunity to watch these entertaining birds up close. If multiple feeders are hung in different locations, not only can you observe more hummingbirds, but there will be less competition for a hummingbird feeder. It is easy to make your own nectar. Just mix one part white sugar to 4 parts water. Your hummingbird feeders provide extra energy but are not the bird's main food source. Primarily, they feed on small insects and the nectar in flowers. The best feeders are sturdy and easy to clean. Some have a perch for the birds to rest on and most have multiple feeding ports. Please don't put red food coloring in the nectar! It's not good for the birds and doesn't help to attract them. Be sure to wash your hummingbird feeders with hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly every time you refill them. If mold should appear, empty feeder and scrub right away. Ants can be a problem with any hummingbird feeder as they are attracted to the sugary nectar. We highly recommend adding a "Trap-It" ant moat to the top of your feeder. It is the best means of keeping ants out of your feeder. We show it in this section as well as in Accessories. Hummingbirds are the most common nectar feeding birds. They are quite entertaining to watch and seem to have no fear of coming right up to a house. There is a huge variety of hummingbird feeders to choose from, from inexpensive small plastic feeders to large, very decorative models. The best feeders are sturdy and easy to clean. They all are decorated in red which is the color that attracts hummingbirds the best. If possible, choose a model with a perch so the hummingbirds can land and rest while feeding. Fill your hummingbird feeders with a mixture of one part plain white sugar dissolved in 4 parts clean fresh water. Sometimes people put red food coloring in this nectar, but it isn't necessary for attracting birds and isn't good for the hummers. Also, only use plain white sugar for honey is actually harmful to hummingbirds. Clean hummingbird feeders with hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly at every refill. If mold should appear, which often happens during the hot summer months, empty the feeder and scrub immediately. It won't take long for hummingbirds to find a new feeder, even if it is hung right next to a window. If so many hummers are using a feeder that intense competition develops, it is a good idea to hang another feeder nearby to decrease the competition. Hummingbird feeders provide extra energy but are not the hummer's main food source. Primarily, they feed on small insects and the nectar in flowers. Therefore, more hummingbirds will be attracted to a yard containing flowers that offer a good supply of nectar. Many people do not know that a substantial part of any hummingbird's diet is spiders and insects. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any warm-blooded animal, so they must feed constantly during the day in order to satisfy their calorie needs. In spite of being so small, hummingbirds are very aggressive and are ready to attack other hummingbirds, larger birds or even humans who they think are threatening their food source. During times when many hummers are fighting for the use of hummingbird feeders, not only is there a lot of territorial behavior, but they can get quite upset when we approach the hummingbird feeders even to fill them. In early spring, you may even find Orioles trying to feed at hummingbird feeders. If this happens, be sure to put up Oriole feeders and you will have them visiting all summer while they raise their young nearby. Hummingbirds range from southwestern Alaska to the Staits of Magellan. However, the number of species definitely diminish as you move farther away from the Equator. In North America, only the Ruby-throated hummingbird breeds east of the Mississippi, but there are 14 other species in the West and in the mountains of the Southwest. No hummers breed on the praires of the Great Plains. Most of our species are migratory and the Ruby-throated crosses the Gulf of Mexico and winters in Central America. |
